Biloxi Health Fair (Biloxi, Mississippi)
April 2009

Biloxi Health Fair

Thang Ba Pham, D.D.S., Dental Team Coordinator, and Howard Ngo, D.D.S., represented WHA at the Biloxi, Mississippi Health Fair on April 19, 2009.  WHA's informational booth provided information about the WHA program and our WHA dentists provided free dental screenings for adults and children.

Several hundred people turned out for the event which showcased the many health-related resources available to Biloxi residents.  This was our team's second visit to this area hard-hit by Hurricane Katrina.  We noticed that life has gradually improved for many.

Dallas Asian Festival (Dallas, Texas)
May 2009

Dallas Health Fair

On May 2, 2009, WHA Team Members Jonathan Hoang Lam, M.D., Howard Nguyen, M.D., Mimi Phuong Vo, R.N., and Quan Luu, Pharm.D., staffed a booth to promote the WHA program for the first time at the annual Dallas Asian Festival.

Despite a gloomy overcast sky, the Festival was well attended by several thousand visitors.  There was good traffic through the WHA booth.  The WHA volunteers were interviewed by a local Chinese newspaper reporter and met up with old acquaintances, including an ER nurse from Bangladesh who expressed interest in joining WHA and perhaps helping to coordinate a trip to her home country.  Throughout the day, WHA volunteers passed out dozens of informational brochures and free lip balms.

Biloxi Health Fair (Biloxi, Mississippi)
May 2008

One of WHA’s volunteer pharmacists, Kaitlin Truong, is a native of Biloxi, Mississippi.  After participating in WHA’s medical mission to Vietnam in 2007, Kaitlin founded a non-profit organization, Asian Americans for Change (AAC), with the goal of improving the health of Biloxi residents who had sustained great losses as a result of Hurricane Katrina.  This was AAC’s first health fair and WHA was able to be one of its sponsors.

Hurricane Katrina damage survey (Biloxi, Mississippi)
April 2006

In April 2006, WHA sent a team to Biloxi, Mississippi to evaluate the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The survey members teamed up with members of the Dallas chapter of the Vietnamese Professional Society to tour the city.  WHA, in conjunction with the Vietnamese American Medical Association, contributed more than $30,000 to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  This first hand experience of the devastation and human tragedy will help shape WHA’s future goals and directions.
